Season 1 of BET, the live action adaptation loosely based on the Japanese manga "Kakegurui" follows a transfer student at a prestigious boarding school where gambling dictates the social hierarchy. The series premiered on today, May 15, 2025 on Netflix.
Elite teens from all over the globe vie for enrollment at St. Dominic’s, an exclusive private school where underground gambling determines social hierarchy. So when a mysterious transfer student named Yumeko (Miku Martineau) arrives and challenges the established order with her top tier gambling skills, things get interesting.
Is it her love for gambling and thrill it brings, or is there something more sinister at play?
Her shadowy past breezes in to the storied academy, her betting prowess and need for revenge threaten to upend the school’s status quo. Yumeko’s erratic behavior, adrenaline rushes during high stakes games, and her intrigue all make this serious entertaining and dark, with a sinister like element lurking just beneath the surface.
When asked by Elle Canada about playing this iconic and alluring character, here is what Martineau had to say, “I mean, Kakegurui is just so iconic. Yumeko is so iconic, and she’s iconic because of how she acts in the manga. It was really important for me to bring that manga energy to life, but also humanize her in a way where she’s relatable and can connect to the other characters on a deep level. And I wanted her physicality, the way she talks, the way she walks, everything, to be so signature to her character.”
The teen-centric thriller stars Miku Martineau, Ayo Solanke, and Eve Edwards.
