The episodes are told from multiple points of view to reflect the contrasting and outright conflicting narratives of its central characters. This compelling drama is inspired by real events involving a Midwestern couple named Kristine and Michael Barnett who adopt a girl with a rare form of dwarfism.
As they begin to raise her along with their biological children, questionable situations begin to arise causing her adoptive mother Kristine (played by Ellen Pompeo) to be concerned about her background and true age. As more and more questionable and dangerous situations come to light, decisions with vast consequences are made and Natalia may be forced to come to terms with what her future may look like sooner rather than later.
This eight episode drama takes viewers on an entertaining tale that showcases the ordeal that ensued for all parties involved after Natalia’s adoption in 2010.. Using multiple points of view gives way to then public figure and speaker Kristine’s side of the saga as well other key characters. As the story continues to playout on screen, audiences learn that Natalia is a orphaned Ukrainian-born girl who had a harsh upbringing plagued with chronic illness. After her transition to life with the Barnett’s, questions continuously arise and a series of truths start to surface. This seemingly normal case of parents adopting a child begins to take an ugly turn that leads to arrests, lies, judgments in the court of public opinion, media headlines, and a full blown tabloid scandal.
