Highly Anticipated Animated Series X-Men '97 From Marvel Launches Season 2 On Disney+
The “X-Men” franchise is an over 30+ year old sci-fi, action universe filled with mutants, humans, and battles amongst men, between mutants and bad guys and more. The X-Men are a band of mutants who use their uncanny gifts to protect a world that hates and fears them all while dealing with personal drama and dangerous challenges like never before.
Marvel Animation’s X-Men ’97 revisits the iconic era of the 1990’s as The X-Men are forced to face a dangerous and unexpected new future. Now, nearly 2 years since season 1 debuted, the series is kicking off season 2 on today, July 1, 2026 with a three episode premiere event on Disney+!
This series began in season 1—a year after the X-Men lose their leader/school principal Professor Xavier. A dying Charles Xavier left his team and planet Earth itself behind and went to the Shi'ar home world, forcing Cyclops to step up and take his place. In season 1 they faced new challenges without Xavier, especially when they find that his will allowed his former enemy Magneto to assume control and leadership of the mutant school.
The voice cast includes Ray Chase as Cyclops, Jennifer Hale as Jean Grey, Alison Sealy-Smith as Storm, Cal Dodd as Wolverine, JP Karliak as Morph, Lenore Zann as Rogue, George Buza as Beast, AJ LoCascio as Gambit, Holly Chou as Jubilee, Isaac Robinson-Smith as Bishop, Matthew Waterson as Magneto, and Adrian Hough as Nightcrawler.
Now for the second time, animated series X-Men ‘97 is back on Disney+ bringing an electrifying, emotional and nostalgia new season. Season 2 continues with the heroic mutant team of X-Men, divided and thrown across different eras in time as they struggle to navigate their return home. Season 2 picks up from the Season 1 finale where Professor X, Magneto, Rogue, Beast, and Nightcrawler are stranded in ancient Egypt and have met the mutant En Sabah Nur, the future Apocalypse.
X-Men ‘97 Season 2 resurrects a forgotten Avengers villain, bringing Marvel’s Rama-Tut back into the spotlight. The latest episodes showcase this iconic Kang the Conqueror variant, taking viewers on a journey to ancient Egypt where they witness the formative years of En Sabah Nur before his transformation into Apocalypse.
The narrative presents Rama-Tut as a tyrant leadership style pharaoh whose brutal reign ignites En Sabah Nur’s thirst for vengeance—a pivotal catalyst in Apocalypse’s evolution. This storyline honors the deep-rooted comic book lore that links these two characters. While the show stops short of explicitly naming him Kang, Rama-Tut remains one of the Conqueror’s most iconic and enduring personas.

The first season of X-Men '97 is one of the most-watched original animated series.
One of the main reasons this show has been so successful may stem from the fact that the lore, nostalgia, and continuity of storyline is present in a way that can easily be enjoyed by long-term, hardcore fans and new comers alike. It is authentic and true to its historical and comical context for character arcs and relationship dynamics through comic book lore and source material. Perhaps this form of production continuity is in part because the creative team has been animating or working with the X-Men universe in some capacity since the '90s.
