Season 7 Part 2 of Outlander kicked off on November 22nd on Starz. Early on, promo for this season indicated that things between Claire and Jamie would go on unforeseen paths and new territory. In part, the season 7 synopsis stated, “Coming off the first half of Outlander Season 7, we find Claire, Jamie and Young Ian leaving the colonies and arriving in their beloved homeland: Scotland. The perils of the Revolutionary War force them to choose between standing by those they love and fighting for the land they have made their new home…. As loyalties change and painful secrets come to light, Jamie and Claire’s marriage is tested like never before”.
Halfway through Part 2 of the 7th season, episode 712 titled, “Carnal Knowledge” was emotionally heavy, gritty, and thrilling. The episode debuted on December 13, 2024.
Things got dicey when we left the last episode after Jamie’s return “from the dead”. These circumstances put Lord John Grey is put in a precarious position. Meanwhile in episode 712, William struggles to understand the surprising revelation about his paternity and figuring out how to channel his emotions proved to be more than the young lad could handle.
For the first time, audiences got to see Jamie chastise his son William in this capacity as two men facing off in a highly charged and emotional sequence. Although William is a man, he is still very young, respectful in nature, and impressionable. Instead of going to blows with his father, he submits. Although reluctant, this new avenue in which their relationship is unfolding may lead to some heated, yet beautiful and heartfelt moments between the two as Jamie has missed out on so much of Williams life already as well as truly knowing who William is a young man. However, that theory has yet to be put into order. Currently, the two Fraser men are quarreling and both dealing with heavy emotions and realizations.

In the peak of the episode, Lord John Grey reveled to Jamie that he and Claire went to bed with each other. This made Jamie become furious and he begin to attack Lord John in a rage. One thing led to another, and now Lord John is in one of the most dangerous situations he’s ever been in. He is now captured by rebels who are seeking to hang him within days.
Other highlights from the episode is when Jamie meets with George Washington and is made a General in the Continental Army. Also when William who is still reeling from the emotional and confusing revelation of his paternity has Ian arrested and kisses Ian’s fiancé Rachel.
As the episode drew to a close, the face to face between Claire and Jamie was poignant and one that viewers have never seen before given the context of what transpired between Claire and Lord John Grey.
Actor Sam Heughan delivered an award worthy performance in this emotionally vulnerable and taxing sequence as James Fraser! Jamie admitted through uncertain and tear stricken eyes that his love for Claire couldn’t be admonished nor even tainted for him in this life or the next, regardless of who she had or would ever sleep with, his soul and life is forever tethered to hers.
Jamie, being the ever loyal husband and soldier that he is, found a way to recalibrate his emotions from anger, rage, and insecurity to understanding and passion. Regardless of how he reacted in the moments since the revelation from Lord John about he and Claire, the realization that Claire is and will always be the love of his life and their loyalty and love transcends both this life will always ground him and bring him back to his senses.
In the end, honest truths were revealed and Jamie and Claire’s bond was resealed and it is in tact as possible for now. However, for Lord John Grey, escape was imminent and the only way to avoid hanging at sunrise. Although badly injured, he snuck out during the night, but the rebels were hot in pursuit on his trail. Will Lord John make it out safely or will he face the gallows? The outcome of his fate and safety will have a mighty impact on all of the Fraser family members.
