"Miss Scarlet" has a new title and new cases that need to be solved!
Miss Scarlet (previously Miss Scarlet and The Duke) follows Eliza Scarlet, Victorian London’s first-ever female detective. The series is back for its 5th season with some new faces and a slight, but new name change. Episode 1 of the 5th season kicked off on January 12, 2025 on PBS at 7:00 PM Central.
In Miss Scarlet, Kate Phillips portrays the headstrong Miss Scarlet in this crime series. The cast also includes Cathy Belton as Ivy, housekeeper and mother figure to Eliza, and Felix Scott as Patrick Nash, another private eye whom Eliza crosses paths with, among others. In Season 5, Tom Durant-Pritchard joins the cast as Detective Inspector Alexander Blake.
Last season saw Scarlett’s childhood friend turned competition, William “The Duke” Wellington (played by Stuart Martin) officially depart from London and his role at Scotland Yard to embark on a new journey across the pond in New York City.
In season 5 with a new Detective Inspector Alexander Blake in tow, Scarlett is hopeful that although she is female, this DI will be less concerned with her gender and more with her work ethic. However, things started on a bumpy path between the two which provides an interesting subplot early on in the season. Alexander is a handsome former soldier and respected detective inspector who joins the force at Scotland Yard to replace William after he goes to America.
The synopsis states, “In the new season, Eliza’s agency is thriving, and her professional life is on a successful path — on the personal side however, Duke has now been away in New York for several months and Eliza is forced to make a difficult decision. Meanwhile, a new Detective Inspector comes to Scotland Yard and Eliza must navigate building a relationship with him if she’s going to continue having access to police resources. All these changes and decisions beg the question – can Eliza Scarlet have it all?”
