"Queenie" makes a royal debut on Hulu!
This 8 episode series is created and executively produced by Candice Carty-Williams, it’s also based on her 2019 novel “Queenie”. Queenie the series made its debut exclusively on Hulu in the U.S., Channel 4 in the U.K. and the Republic of Ireland, and on Disney+ in all other territories.
Queenie follows Queenie Jenkins (played by Dionne Brown) is a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman living in south London, straddling two cultures and slotting neatly into neither. Queenie is also a struggling writer, and after unforeseen circumstances and let downs, she goes on a journey of growth and self-acceptance.
Queenie is deep, creative, sincere, and engaging. Viewers can connect to the content through the authentic, vulnerable, emotional, and honest character moments throughout the series. The writing expands the storyline well as viewers get a firsthand look and the complex and multilayered life of this black woman. Both mental and physical health, setbacks, hard breakups, childhood traumas, and general obstacles and challenges that we all may face in life make this show real, emotional, and poignant.
In multiple episodes, Queenie Jenkins experiences plenty of fun, self-assuring, and unexpected moments amidst the lows. At times the show does well, treading between provocative and dark, but also providing moments of cynical humor while giving off a rom com vibe. Queenie Jenkins very human and relatable, but she’s also proof that feeling obligated to uphold certain cultural norms, tropes, and stereotypes can affect your mental.
Queenie also stars Samuel Adewunmi as Frank, and Bellah as Kyazike. Non-writing executive producers are Further South’s Steve November and Sarah Conroy, with Lisa Walters as co-executive producer and series producer.
