Remarkably Bright Creatures Is A Cozy, Whimsical and Comforting Movie on Netflix.
In the movie Remarkably Bright Creatures—senior hood, searching souls, and Sea life create a compelling and entertaining premise. Through the stillness, solitude and often silent moments in phases and stages of life where there are more yesterdays mounting than tomorrows—a senior woman named Tova and an aging Octopus connect and forge an unforgettable bond.
The movie debuted May 8, 2026 on Netflix. Based on the bestselling novel by Shelby Van Pelt. It follows Tova (Sally Field), a widow working night shifts at a local aquarium who forms a special bond with a giant Pacific octopus named Marcellus at an aquarium in a small town filled with intriguing community members.
This book adaptation centers on themes of friendship, grief, loneliness, family and ageism. Starring Sally Field, Lewis Pullman, and Alfred Molina (voice of the octopus, Marcellus), this heartwarming and all too relatable, humanistic and poignant film chronicles a stage in life where wisdom, isolation and distant memories are what can bring both genuine smiles and intense bouts of grief.
With a smooth and easy to follow plot for the movie, Sally Fields so effortlessly masters the art of disappearing into her character. Her ability to portray women who can be multifaced with nuance and deep emotion has been one of the many reasons why her multidecade acting career has continued to be heralded, consistent and spanned over generations. From the 1960’s to present— at the wonderful age of 79, Sally has continued to captive audiences and evoke emotional responses for viewers through her ability to embody woman who are a range of things…strong, enduring, vulnerable, resilient, funny and much more.
As Tova’s path crosses with both humans and creatures, she develops a connection with Marcellus as well as a young man named Cameron (Lewis Pullman). Tova, Cameron, and Marcellus are all searching for something both at the surface level and within themselves. This unique film adds a bit of mystery and humor to help enhance the entertainment factor for the premise which is overall somber in tone.
This sentimental story is narrated by the wise, often cranky and clever octopus Marcellus with funny, intuitive and enjoyable dialogue.

The aquarium setting and it’s glowing lights, expansion marine life and translucent backdrop serve as a reminder about youthful days gone by on class field trips, the exploration of new, bright and fascinating things, and the calming and soothing sense that can come from water or the sea. As the story unfolds, Tova allows her heart to open up. In doing so, beautiful things begin to blossom once she lets in a little light.
Remarkably Bright Creatures focuses on inner journeys in life, nature, it’s creatures and human connection. This film is an incredibly enjoyable, honest, and heartfelt.
