After years of reversals, over turned cancellations and more. The law enforcement drama known as S.W.A.T. is finally coming to an end. The series ending finale will air tonight on CBS. Season 8 episode 21 titled “Ride or Die” will be the series ending episode.
S.W.A.T. is developed by Aaron Rahsaan Thomas and Shawn Ryan, the series first premiered on CBS on November 2, 2017. S.W.A.T. exists in a shared television universe with the FX crime drama The Shield, which Shawn Ryan also created.
The series was partially inspired by real-life experiences shared by police officers, adding a level of authenticity to its portrayal of law enforcement. It also draws inspiration from both the original 1975 series and the 2003 film adaptation, with the 2017 reboot maintaining a similar premise and reintroducing several characters from the 2003 film.
In the first hour of the two-part series finale, Hondo (Shemar Moore) pursues an adversary from his past. The final hour promises even more action when 20-Squad takes on a gang of Russian ex-pat mercenaries.
Executive producer Andrew Dettmann says that this 2 hour special will test the word “family” in new ways. When speaking to TV Insider, he stated, “The characters gain a greater appreciation and understanding for each other in the course of the finale. “It’s a reflection of how our cast and crew have become so incredibly close over the course of the show, and those relationships and affections feel only stronger knowing that we’re near our end,” Dettmann says. “By shining a light on the respect and commitment each of the characters have for each other, we’re giving a nod to our larger family and the bonds we’ve made.”
Over the years multiple actors have starred and played in recurring roles, here are a few: Shemar Moore as Daniel "Hondo" Harrelson, Alex Russell as Jim Street, Jay Harrington as David "Deacon" Kay, David Lim as Victor Tan, Patrick St. Esprit as Commander Robert Hicks, Kenny Johnson as Officer III+1 Dominique Luca, and Annie Ilonzeh as Officer III Devin Gamble.
