The 76th Emmy Awards saw record breaking wins and several "first time" accolades throughout the night!

Last night on September 15, 2024 The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards took place at the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles, California. The Primetime Emmy Awards are a part of the extensive range of Emmy Awards for artistic and technical merit for the American television industry. Bestowed by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), the Primetime Emmys are presented in recognition of excellence in American primetime television programming. Actors Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy were announced as the ceremony's co-hosts on August 16, 2024.
The 76th Primetime Emmy Awards honored the best in American prime time television programming from June 1, 2023, until May 31, 2024, as chosen by the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Scenes In Color was granted access to the Official 76th Emmy’s Media Room and allowed to ask questions to winners of illustrious award.
For many, it was already a record breaking night heading into the ceremony.
Nominations per network were 33 nominations for FX, 27 nominations for Netflix, 26 nominations for Apple TV+, 23 nominations for HBO / Max, 9 nominations for ABC, 8 nominations for Prime Video, 7 nominations for Hulu, 4 nominations for NBC, 3 nominations for Showtime, and 2 nominations for CBS.
Some of the notable records that were shattered were:
Fx’s Shogun became the first majority non-English language series to win Best Drama Series at the Emmys.
Hollywood veteran actress Jodie Foster became a first time Emmy winner for Best Lead Actress in a Limited Series at the Emmys for her performance as Chief Danvers in True Detective: Night Country on HBO.
Anna Sawai became the first actor of Asian descent to win in the category of Best actress in a Drama Series.
The Bear on Fx broke its own record for most Emmy wins ever for a single comedy season (11 Emmy wins total, including those of lead actor Jeremy Allen-White, supporting actor Ebon-Moss Bachrach, and supporting actress Liza Colon-Zayas).
Actors Eugene Levy and his son Dan Levy became the first time in Emmy history that a father-and-son duo co-hosted a ceremony.
Liza Colón-Zayas is the first Latina actress to win in the Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series category.
Fx’s Shogun also made history at the 2024 Emmys for a new all-time record for a single season of TV with 18 wins total (combined 14 wins from the 2024 Creative Arts Emmys and 4 wins from the 76th Primetime Emmys broadcast).
Emotions ran heavy for many first time winners such as the New Zealand born actress and former Japanese singer Anna Sawai who visibly sobbed heading toward the stage to accept her her first Emmy Award for Outstanding Actress in a Lead Drama Series for her portrayal as Lady Mariko in FX’s hit show Shogun.
Other first time nominees and winners included veteran actress Liza Colon-Zayas who won her first Emmy for Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series for her gritty and honest portrayal as Tina in FX’s hit show The Bear. She used this moment to pay homage to the greats before her in the room on this night as well as pay tribute to other Latina women and seasoned veterans in the industry. Thanking her showrunner and creators while also reminding women to vote for their rights.

Scenes In Color was granted access to the Official 76th Emmy’s Media Room where the cast and creatives of Shogun was present after their record breaking night. Shogun actor Hiroyuki Sanada fielded and answered questions in both Japanese and English for the media. This was a very nice touch to those who speak Japanese as their native tongue, being that this award worthy show production features a mostly Japanese cast and the majority of the dialogue is in the Japanese language.
While other first time nominees such as Richard Gadd used their acceptance speech in order to inspire others to keep pushing forward through tough times and to know that there is light at the end of the tunnel. Gadd won 2 individual Emmys on the night, one for Outstanding Writing for a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie and one for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited or Anthology Series or Movie. Richard won for his self portrayal and writing in a harrowing, dark, and thrilling tale about stalking, self love, and acceptance called “Baby Reindeer” on Netflix.

All in all, the night was magical as many first time nominees and winners celebrated the most award worthy and hard working professionals in front of the camera and behind the scenes. Other noteworthy winners from the 76th Emmy Awards are Jean Smart was awarded the Emmy for Lead Actress in a Comedy Series, now making her a 6x Emmy winner, Michaela Coel, Mr. & Mrs. Smith for Guest Actress in a Drama Series, Pat Sajak, Wheel of Fortune Host for a Game Show, Maya Rudolph, Big Mouth for Character Voice-Over Performance and more.
Fx ultimately won the most networks awards at the 2024 Emmys with 36 wins in total. Netflix came in second place with 24 Emmys wins, followed by HBO and Max in third place with 14 Emmy wins, then Apple TV+ in fourth with 10 Emmy wins, and lastly their was a tie for fifth place between ABC, NBC, Disney+, and Hulu which all received 7 Emmy wins on the night.
Country Singer Jelly Roll performed his song "I Am Not Okay" for the annual In Memoriam segment, paying tribute to those who have worked in multiple capacities in the cinematic industry that have now passed away in recent years.
A few first time nominees who left empty handed included first-time nominees Jonathan Bailey for Fellow Travelers, Nicole Beharie for The Morning Show, Lionel Boyce for The Bear, Dakota Fanning for Ripley, and Lily Gladstone for Under the Bridge.
The nights biggest honoree was Greg Berlanti, who was honored at the 76th Primetime Emmy Awards with the Governors Award for his work in the industry with a special emphasize on milestones and progression for LGBTQIA+ actors and actresses.
