Freaky Tales is a new film set in The Bay Area in 1987. The film beat boxes into theaters on April 4, 2025. Freaky Tales is a multi-track mixtape of colorful characters — an NBA star, a corrupt cop, a female rap duo, teen punks, neo-Nazis, and a debt collector — on a collision course in a fever dream of showdowns and battles. Edging on bizarre and remarkable, audiences will love this crazy and fun film.
Throughout the film, there are 4 tantalizing interwoven stories, littered with nostalgic 1987’s pop culture references and themes. The sports teams, apparel, slang, music, and overall culture displayed during the film screams “Welcome To Oakland”! The setting constantly reminds viewers that they are in The Bay Area during the wild and interesting 1980’s. The atmosphere is electric as the dark underbelly of punk culture, hip hop, illicit street activity, racism, and sports all collide!
This unique film is directed by famed directing duo, Ryan Fleck and Anna Boden. Freaky Tales features an all-star ensemble including Pedro Pascal, Ben Mendelsohn, Jay Ellis, Normani, Dominique Thorne, Jack Champion, Ji-young Yoo, Angus Cloud, and Tom Hanks. Adding to The Bay Area centric film, iconic California rap artist Too Short, known for his crass and raunchy lyrics narrates throughout the film, plays a cop in the film, and his music is also a huge part of the overall premise.
