Resilient. Defiant. Triumphant. After two tumultuous decades in the public eye, two-time Olympic gold medalist and World Cup champion goalkeeper Hope Solo is ready to tell her story. Across several unflinching interviews, Solo unpacks the unique mix of glory and defeat that accompanied her rise to a level of fame that transcended her sport. Despite giving everything to soccer, Solo’s competitive obsession and radical candor made her into a lightning rod of criticism, often forcing her to go it alone in her quest for the most elusive of prizes: honor, recognition, and respect.
This docuseries explores life before the fame, before the goal saving championship games, controversial headlines, and rightfully earned soccer accolades. This story delves into the tumultuous, dysfunctional, and unstable upbringing for a woman who later went on to become one of the best, if not the best goalkeeper in US soccer history.
This story is filled with triumph, victory, honors, and redemption, however, it is far from a Cinderella story, and for those who are familiar with Hope Solo, you wouldn’t expect anything less. This fierce, tough, often intimidating on and off the field competitor never truly fit the mold of a princess, therefore this docuseries gets it right! It’s honest, real, and even uncomfortable at times when interviews are conducted and hard topics from the past are presented again. The exploration of past scandals, legal battles, and controversies are reevaluated in modern times. Rehashing these emotionally heavy and controversial topics sheds a new light for those still near and those once dear to Solo throughout her journey, as well as gives fans and critics alike a new perspective.
As first hand accounts and interviews play out in the series from various coaches and friends, first hand, in depth accounts are told and regrets are also admitted. It is very unfortunate that out of all of the women that made of The US soccer world cup and Olympic teams that Hope played on, only 1 player was willing to even sit for the docuseries. Firsthand accounts are given through her former college coaches at the University of Washington (Lesle Gallimore and Amy Griffin), FIFA Female Player of the Century Michelle Akers, her best friend and former teammate Cheryl Hirss, former coach Pia Sundhage, legal counsel Rich Nichols, and PR manager Melinda Travis.
In many stories Hope is the villain, but sometimes the villain was once a hero. Looking at the origin story and examining it further can reveal that being a villain rather than a victim was the path to how they achieved victory. You can decide when you check out UNTOLD: Hope Solo vs. U.S. Soccer streaming now on Netflix!
